House Boat

Houseboats, also known as Kettuvallam, are boats that have been modified to be used as a houses. They are widely used in the Indian state of Kerala and usually consist of a a thatched roof covering a wooden hull.

These boats, in a variety of shapes and sizes, were traditionally used not only as homes but also as the main means of transport in the backwaters of Kerala in the past. More than 900 houseboats ply the backwaters and are quite popular with tourists.

Lotus

Lotus is the national flower of India, colloquially called Water Lilly. This plant has adapted to grow in slow moving rivers and delta regions.

Makhana, a popular snack, is made from lotus seeds. Bihar, in India, produces 90% of world's Makhana.

Scroll

Scrolls were the first form of editable record keeping texts. 'Editable' in contrast to stone slabs. There is also that story of how an order was edited that lead to an assassination of a Maratha Peshwa.

Scrolls originated in ancient Egypt and were later used in India. Since the scroll needed to be rolled up, special inks were developed for its use.
